Portrait of Belen Fuentes – Managing Director Industry in Spain

What is your current position at SEGULA?

I am currently Managing Director Industry for Western Spain.

What is your background? What other professional experiences have you had?

I have always worked in engineering and construction services. I started in the water treatment sector and since 2008 in the Oil&Gas and industrial sectors.

How and when did you decide to become an engineer?

Since I was a child, I have always been passionate about the industry. My father has been working since I was born in the Paper Pulp industry and I remember excitedly waiting for the “Christmas cocktail” to visit the factory. Even when I’m on vacation and I see a Refinery/factory, I am absorbed.

When I was studying my last year at the high school (18 years old), I liked chemistry, as well as the industrial world, so I decided to study chemical engineering.

Later I studied industrial engineering.

What do you like about working in the Industry sector?

Each project is a new challenge. It’s like art, seeing how some projects start with a simple sentence and end up building a large plant or industrial revamping.

As a woman, was it difficult to get into your current position? Have you been supported?

In my beginnings, I was more oriented towards Construction sector, where 95% are men; but they have always helped me and taught me a lot. I am very grateful to all the people with whom I have shared my working life.

What challenges do you face at SEGULA?

Work with very high growth rates; maintain a stable workload for the team. It is also very important to maintain the motivation of all the collaborators in my charge.

What do you like about your position today? Do you have any successes to share with us?

I am very satisfied with all the achievements made since I started at SEGULA in 2018, namely the high growth rate. My entire team works as one and it shows in the satisfaction of the clients and the high workload in projects they entrust us with.

What advice would you give to women who want to work in the engineering/industry sector and reach high positions of responsibility?

Try really hard, learn from everyone around us, own up to mistakes, and never stop setting goals.

What is your biggest dream? (personal or professional)

To be happy and make those around me happy.
